Welcome to "Phil's Loco Photos"

A long overdue return to Portugal, first visit since 1994 my reason for neglect was simple, being a fan of ALCO and MLW power, the similar power in Greece was done in preference due to longer trains, steam heat and much bigger hills! Now that CP 1501’s were over fifty years old this was certainly something to celebrate, however CP were having a partial strike and it took us eight days to find a 1501 working! I flew to Lisboa and as in the olden days straight over to Barreiro, the Vila Real overnight was running to Beja and back so at least it gave a sociable and comfortable overnight in the lovely first class compartments. We kept hoping for preferred 1500 Alco action but no luck, even a pair of 1400s worked IR873 to Vila Real with a different pair returning next morning! Thankfully the loud 1931s were busy working so over the trip picked up quite a few new ones, got three on my birthday! We had two days at Entroncamento with 1551 power to Covilhã and Badajoz which was excellent. Finally on the 5th 1524 came out to work and we had a good couple of days with a few 1500s including 1501 now over fifty years old on main line passenger work. I then made may way on the Sud Express to Madrid for a day and then an evening flight back home
